View Full Version : Good sub?

I have parked my car for the winter but took it out last week when the weather was good. I noticed that my bass didn't sound the same. After exhausting myself messing with the settings on the reciever, I popped the trunk and saw my busted sub. I usually don't turn my music up too loud because I understand that not everyone listens to the same kind of music. The sub is just for my enjoyment only.
So my question is: What is a good sub for a good price? My old (read: busted) sub is a JL 10W0. I'm not too big into audio, so does anyone have recommendations?

I like oddball stuff. My 98 Ranger has 2 Premier 12s that I've been really happy with, but if/when I ever get back to messing with the 83 it's getting 1 or 2 Atomic 0894s. :naughty:

Man stay with JL you just can't go wrong there. What size amp and box do you have?? Do you want it to be a little louder or just the same as before?? Let me know as I have a good hookup on JL as I am sure a couple of other guys do from HiFI Buys.

I don't have specifics on the amp. My buddy got rid of his car about a year ago and just gave it to me. It's some competition amp that could push well from what I was told.
The box my now busted 10W0 is in, is a truck/wedge box. It seemed to be the smallest/lightest for my application. 240's don't have the most trunk space. I'd like to stay with a JL. I've heard nothing but good things about them and my experience with them was good. I just don't want to spend enough to the point that I'm debating whether I should have bought performance parts instead. What specific 10" JL sub should I look into?
For the price and quality ive stuck with MTX. The 2 10"s i got now ive had for 3+ yrs and I love them, Ive never had any trouble.

i guess i spent more money with Tom so he gave me better deals than Lee, although Lee did give me a good price on the last CD player that i got from there.

I was gonna say jimmy jon's
The JL 10w1 v2 would be your best choice if you were happy with the w0.
It sounds better and will work in similar airspace/power range as the w0.
It is also surprisingly light with a very shallow mounting depth if you choose to change enclosures and do something more stealth.
I'd bet you could get one of those for $75 or less out the door at hifi!;)
Just ask for Lee.

If you do want the stereo to sound a little better, get the 6.5" door speakers brackets from a '91 or '92. They aren't too hard to find on ebay, and they are a direct replacement. 6.5's would sound quite a bit better than some tired old 4" speakers ;) . Don't bother with the back speakers in the OEM location. They are located poorly, and they are a goofy size (4.5" or sometimes called 5").
I agree though. I don't think I ever bothered listening to the stereo in that car :D

I've had both a 10" Kicker Comp VR (dual voice coil) and I currently have a JL10w6v2 - and I loved both for what they are:
Kicker=Inexpensive, but very loud and tough subwoofer - AMAZING VALUE
JL=Clearest, Fastest, Tightest sound - but Expensive.
Id go with a 10v3 if I were you or a 10w1v2 - both great -
Lee Hooked me up too!
Either will make ya happy - just depends on how much you wanna spend . . .

RE XXX
Same quality and SPL and SQ as a W7 for much less.
You can also deliver more wattage to it if you wanna feel that bass.
I had a 15" XXX in my Cavalier (stolen) on a DEI 2400D that his 142.2 - inside of the trunk.
No offense but I didn't understand a bit of that besides it was stolen. I'm not too deep into audio. I have stocks all around besides the sub and I am content with the setup. I did put some Pioneers or was it Infinitys... anyways, I put those all around the wife's car and they are a world of difference. As I stated before though, I only have it for my enjoyment. Just a little thump is enough. I won't be dB dragging anyone :D
Will do on the audio forums though, thanks!

It's funny to see somebody here recommending an RE XXX sub. We should be putting a 12 in a charger at some point this week.

Tune that sucker low and you'll be a happy camper.
Lol we tune everything low. It's not for US though it's for a customer. Silver 06 Charger with 24's.
They'll try to scare you about buying products over the internet not having any warranties at all, but that is extremely far from the truth.
hmmmm...
http://mobile.jlaudio.com/jlaudio_pages.php?page_id=111
I understand that many of the online companies offer their own in-house warranty and may really stand behind it. However, it's worth a few dollars to be able to walk in the front door of a place and kick the salesperson in the balls if and when you have a problem.
More than likely they will not price match, but you will have the ball in your court as far as pricing goes.
You might be surprised. When I was in retail we could come surprisingly close and still offer better service than someone across the country.
Be careful how you handle this with a local dealer if you would really like to do business with them. A good attitude goes a long way. A bad attitude can get you zero help when you buy it online and come to the local dealer with a potential problem.
Basically, spend a week or two on "caraudio.com" "elitecaraudio.com" and just get a feel for what is popular on the forum. These are the same people you see at the competitions for sound quality and SPL competitions. You'll be able to tell those two apart quickly on the forums.
I agree!
Unfortunately, many of the competitors are sponsored by the companies that they preach about.
They are rip-off artists, period.
Care to elaborate on this one?
fintheman, I'm not trying to bust your chops. I just wanted to offer a different angle on your comments.

Sorry to complicate things. If you are already on this forum I'd hope you'd know how to navigate and learn without posting many questions like n3wbs :)

I said "no offense"
Didn't I?
It really IS different strokes for different folks... but I'll take your word on this one and spend 1-3 weeks of what little time I have and do some "research" on car audio. You're right though, I should have devoted more of my time on car audio and be very fluent in audio lingo. Going fast is overrated anyways... :D
Me ----> :doh:
And I guess while we're at it: Mods, can we go ahead and delete the Audio section? There's really no need for it because we should all

Sil, I got a 12W0 juss chilling in my garage. its an 8 ohm unit, so you will need to find another to parallel them down and bridge them on a nice 2 channel amp.
Sil,
Any updates on the system?

I might have to come up and get an amp sometime soon. I don't really have too much $$ to spare so I don't know when it'll be. I'm trying to finish up the last of the "go fast" goodies.

They don't make the w0 anymore. It's been replaced by the w1v2 which is far superior and the same price. You can probably get one for <$85 from Lee at hifi.
