hey guys, i just got an 06 honda element, and it has xm radio built in. my wife bought me a sirius reciever for Christmas and i really dont want to pay for two different services. . . so, im wondering if there is a way to be able to plug the siruis reciever into the xm radio deck in the element. i could have sworn i had seen something like this in the past, but cant seem to find it now. . . anybody know of anything like this?

Well if you have a standalone unit you'll be fine. I think you should have an "aux" type input somewhere in the console? If so- just get a male to male cable and use it to plug the audio into the OEM system.
You might be able to find an adapter to use Sirius with the factory radio, but you would have to search the Sirius forums out there.

Just stick with XM and you'll like it better anyways.........

My brother had this probelm, but it was casuet eh car he bought had Sirus and he already had XM. The converter cord that he got for it from Circuit City didnt really work. IT was always a week signal and had a poor quality sound to it. So he ditched the stock radio and bought another Pioneer head unit and used the xm with that.

Exactly what Sirius do you have Paul? Is it a seperate tuner or one that has to be connected to something else to change the stations?

im pretty sure this one is it. i havent looked into it to find out if i have to hook it up to anything else before hooking up to the radio (as in a tuner, i guess).

That unit SHOULD have a wireless FM modulator built in. You would need to set it to a station that isn't used in the area (I use 107.1 or 106.3) and tune the radio in the car to the same station. You should be able to hear it at that point.

107.1 is a station out of Bowling Green so it won't work too far north of town. I don't know of anything near 106.3. The lower numbered stations tend to be lower powered stations, but there are more of them and I hate having to hunt for a clear station often.

yea its also where you place the antenna atleast with my exp. in the cobra i had it on the right side of my car where the top meets to close & the signal quality sucked no matter what channel it was on but now its on the left side i have no problems with(98.1) the signal except buy lp field every its perfect

Even after the merger the built in XM, or any XM tuners, might not be able to pick up Sirius channels, or Sirius tuners be able to pick up XM channels. It's still up in the air according to a Sirius rep (met with him last week) as to how current equipment will work - it is guaranteed to work but might not pick up the full spectrum - a "hybrid tuner" will most likely be needed and sold after the merger is complete.
Merger might not even happen, as it's up to the FCC to allow it since it would create a monopoly in satellite radio.
best interface for the plug and play is a hard wire FM modulator. Plugs into the back of your radio in line with the antenna at the back of the head unit. When powered on it blocks out all FM signals from the car's antenna allowing the best possible signal, although it does still go through the FM band, which requires converting the digital signal to analog, resulting in signal quality loss.

wow that was a long one.......

Well since both companys have birds in the air- they could broadcast the full package on both sets. Then my XM tuner would get everything and someone else's Sirius tuner would get the same programs, too. Right now- a Sirius antenna will pick up XM and vice versa...........

xm antenna wil only receive xm signal and sirius only sirius - they are set up to receive different frequencies (see sirius link in previous post requiring seperate antenna if converter is used)- although they bands butt up against each other with no buffer so there is some bleed at the edge of the spectrum. the satellites could be reprogrammed but they have different orbital patterns and on same bandwith would interfere with each other. The 2 XM satellites are basically stable on the equator while the 3 Sirius satellites cross in a figure 8 pattern having 2 over the us at all times and the other in the southern hempishpere, where it turns off and recharges the solar panels. This is why XM signal quality deteriorates the farther north you go and why they have more FM repeaters in major metro areas - lower angle doesn't allow a true satellite signal to reach on city streets.
We are in the "sweet spot" for sirius and therefore almost always receive a true digital satellite signal. I have had both - Sirius for a few years and XM in the Trailblazer I bought not too long ago. Even the hardwire XM tuner gave me FM quality analog in many locations.
