Nice pics Bob.
Educate me on what fisheye is and what is L series lense? I'm still in the very early learning stages of my Rebel XTi.

L series are Canon's top of the line. I think L stands for Luxury. I got the cheapest L series available. The 70-200 F4L <$500 used

Thanks for the info.
What do you think about the image stabilizer lenses? Are they worth the extra cost?

If you can afford it, definately. I have IS on one of my lenses and it rocks. You get alot more keepers.

I can believe that, especially for action shots. Here are a couple of shots taken my first time out w/ the camera when we took our 5/6 year old team to a Sounds game.
I took this in manual mode while the sun was in my favor. I feel pretty good about this one. I was going for the blur look behind my imige.

At the end of game, around 10:00pm, the kids get to go down on the field and run bases. I didn't have the sun to assist me and my noob camera skills took over in the manual mode. So I ended up w/ shots like this.

Now on the 2nd one, IS would not have saved you. It stops the camera motion, not the people motion. The only thing you can do to freeze action is a fast shutter speed. You did the right thing by using ISO1600, but the light was too dim and your lens was too slow to give you a fast shutter speed. A F2.8 lens would have given you 2 more stops of light and let you run a faster shutter. Confusing?

I looked at the photo again and I think IS may have saved on the second pic. If You look at the people standing still on the top (the legs), they are blurry and they wern't moving, which means camera shake. A tripod or monopod will also help if you don't have IS

You are correct. I was using a Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 lense. Trying to keep the -2EV to + 2EV range at zero w/ the aperature at f4, ISO 1600 I wasn't able to increase the shutter speed enough to offset my camera shake while trying to follow my son.
I can see a f2.8 lens in the future. I might just pony up the extra dollars for the IS version.

the "trying to follow my son" part is the problem, combined with the slow shutter - it sounds like it wasn't necessarily camera shake, as intentional movement following the subject....reaction time is fast enough on your XTi that the easiest way to capture in this situation would be to get a focal length from your son, move ahead of him and shoot once he enters frame. subject following is a hard habit to break if you are going from a DSC which will have shutter lag of near 1 sec.

I'll do that next time. Thanks for the information.
Following my target comes from years of Hunting and shooting moving targets.

Nice man. I love my 70-200 F4/L. I just got a 17-40 F4/L also for my trip to ireland next week. Addicted to L lenses now. Gotta figure out how to keep convincing the wife to let me get more.
Heres a couple i took of my Pug with the 17-40 been using Adobe Lightroom for all Post Processing. Program is so great, all i will shoot is in RAW mode now.

Some high saturation on this one, intentional.

And if you're a beer drinker, try Kilkenney while you're there. Last time I had one was about 10 years ago in Germany, and since I can't find it here in the US all I can do is wait until I get to visit abroad again. Enjoy your trip, can't wait to see the pics.

Nice use of the rule of thirds. Now tell me did he blow snot all over the lens after? I never could get a good shot of my aunts pekingese, and always had to clean the lens after.
I need to break out my Pentax and run some B&W through it or some more of the expired Ektapress I have.

Thanks, still being quite the noob, small things like the rule of thirds has seriously helped my avg photographs come out better. I had my wife holding a treat over my shoulder during this shot, so he was all attention, and i avoided the snot :-p
