Unplug your modem, plug it back in.....does it work? NO. Well I'm stumped. Say a prayer to Shiva and call me in the morning.
My computer was on yesterday and the power went out. Turned the comp back on and no internet. IPconfig gives me a 169.xxx.xx.xxx number that comcast says is no good. My Vonage still works that is connected to the same router. ipconfig /renew doesn't work. Says not connected or something. Any things I can try?

Network card in your computer may be hosed, or the drivers for the card are hosed. If the other device plugged into the router is working fine (Vonage) then your Internet connection is good.

right on. I'll try to pick up a card. The kicker is that my windows says it will expire in 1 day if I don't re-authenticate it.:noize:

Boo. I probably have a card that I can loan you if you want to test it out first before sinking money into it. A network card probably won't cost you more than $10-15 at most places though.

A 169... IP means Windows isn't getting an IP from any outside source so it's making one up for you. Does a working Vonage mean that the modem is working?
That'd suck if your onboard NIC went bad, make sure to try another net cable as well.

Best bet is to offer sacrificial smoke and pleasent odors to Shiva & Vishnu, and then all your internets porn will abound.

Try using the cable that your Vonage plugs into, that will check a known good cable and port on your router against your PC hardware.

Not sure how vonage hooks up: Ethernet cable to router? Try using the Vonage Ethernet and router port to connect your computer
edit: eh, that's what Supa said
See if it works in any other ports on the router, try a different cable (doubt that's it). Is there anything else you can hook up to the router (another computer/laptop/game console) to verify the computer is the piece not making the connection?

Yeah, vonage works, so the cable modem definately works. I havent tried my laptop on the wifi. I've switched cables to the desktop. Maybe the onboard nic is bad. I guess I could just get a wireless card for my desktop. I'll try reinstalling the drivers first though.

Son, you gonna be with out net for a week. Done went and blowed up @ the pole. Maybe you're lucky and won't have to deal with the **** I did two months ago. OR You could always call Mr.Comcastic to come BACK to your house @ 9:30pm and he stays over til almost midnight before you get the net back ONE WEEK after you called about the problem.
Then to add the cherry on top, you get a $236.00 bill. Guess, who ain't payin that shizzle!?! I done went and called Tina in billing yesterday. She's only making me pay $80.90.

I'm having this same issue at my house. Been without the net for over 3 weeks  I've done the following:
Swap out modems with comcast (didn't work)
uninstalled and re-installed all hardware (still nothing)
Changed from ethernet to USB port and added software (still not getting ****)
I ran the comcast diagnostics and it's saying my cable is not connected when it is. Just as a test thinking they vynil guys hosed up the cable I hooked up a TV and it works with no issues. starting to think something is screwed up in the computer or Comcrap is ****in me in the ass for their internet :rant2:
Any help would be useful; having youtube withdraws...:D

The fact that the TV works doesn't prove the signal is good enough for the modem. They require different bandwidths. The cable or splitter might be bad.
