View Full Version : Throwing this out again... This Fall - Tail of the Dragon?
PhoenixINX

I threw out this idea last year, and got a LOT of praise and opposition. With not enough interest, I never really persued it.
Let's hope this go around catches more attention. :)
http://www.tailofthedragon.com/pics2007/0517_ferrari/line-up.jpg
What I am proposing is a NON-racing FAMILY event, and merely a gathering for all parties to take a weekend off and enjoy the company of fellow members and the atmosphere of the mountains. Obvious perks to this area is the Dragon, which is an open highway and recognized as one of the most memorable drives in the United States.
I participated in the ZDayz event years back, and while it was WAY larger than I would ever want to attempt... it's format was spot on.
Group events could include... (IF we even chose to get that formal)
- Detailing clinics
- Group cruises
- Car show
If we could target it as fall hits, we 'should' still be able to book enough rooms... More importantly, I'm wanting to gauge if this is really something we could get a healthy amount of people wanting to attend.
If those interested could fire back their thoughts I would be much appreciated. Also those that oppose, your avoidance of this thread notes your position on the topic. :)
Thanks guys/gals!

I would like to go. I have never been to the dragon and have been wanting to ever since I got the Evo, so I would be interested.

Alright... I'm seeing eight people here, which is a great start. :)
Let me call one of the resorts up there, and check their availability. I'll come back with some dates and prices and see what everyone thinks.

If you've never seen it, you will crap your pants. I cannot stress enough that any passengers should take Dramamine 30minutes before starting the drive. It does no good to take it after they start feeling sick. They just end up puking up the pills too. And there's no way off the ride once you're on.
But if you're driving, you'll have a blast. :naughty:

I am down. I will not be staying at the hotel though. My parents only live 45 min from there so I'll probably just shack up with them. I drove up there when I bought my Evo last december before it got too cold. It was a blast!
Just set a date and I'm there.

Convenant to you doesn't mean it's the same for everyone else. I have a wedding that day for my best friend plus it's UT vs. Bama (away) soo. . . .

Seeing as most rentals are automatics, I'll pass. My CR-V (manual) would be more fun to drive IMO.

as for people saying "doing the run in the family car".... its just a road...drive it responsible like... but ive done it, i did it slow. its an ok road, too tight to be real fun IMHO. its nothing but torque out of corner and do it again and again and again. i even have a torquy motor and it was only partialy fun. i thought the skyway was more interesting. super tight corners dont excite me, sweepers do

Totally agree!! The dragon is best real early before it fills up with traffic, but the skyway has some awesome long sweeping curves that are great at 60+!! My all wheel steering loves it :D

Count me in also--was there last weekend with the Miata gang. There are several great roads in a 50-mile radius of the Gap.
As for staying, the Tapoco Lodge is right on the Gap and the Fontana Village is close too. Both are used to hosting car clubs.
I've also done some 1-day trips--get up at like 5:00am and you are there 3 hours later and have it almost to yourself.

I just got back from the Dragon. On the way up there, I saw 5 police on the Tennessee side. 3 on the road, 2 at the same spot pulled over. On the way back, I saw 2, one on the road, and one parked at the very end. I went all the way to Robbinsville and I didnt see a single one on the North Carolina side.

Screw the Dragon, lets go up to the Skyway then. There are a couple of state parks with great hiking and we go right through Telico plains so we can stop in there to see some awesome wheelin'!! Or just hit the long sweaping curves at 80mph at 6000 elivation :D

I would rather let THP or Blount county get be for having my visor up or having my shirt untucked rather than let the Parks folks ding me with a Federal Govt. Ticket for 80mph on the Skyway.

Here's the reason for all the police lately..
Thursday July 12, 2007 - A Michigan rider, Kevin James Hoyt (40), became the first fatality on the Dragon in 2007. The accident was one of many at the tricky Guard Rail Cliff corner at mile 7.2. Troopers measured the fall at 80 feet below the road. The State of Tennessee has allocated $60,000 in funds to assist Blount County Sheriff and Tennessee Highway Patrol in patrolling the Dragon according to a BCSO spokesperson. Riders can expect daily patrols with increased activities during the weekends. This is not meant to be a harsh crack-down, but is an effort to slow riders down in order to reduce accidents. Be warned that excessive speeds and other violations will be enforced.
Friday July 13, 2007 - Two Florida riders were the second and third fatalities on the Dragon in 2007. According to witnesses the three-wheel Honda crossed the centerline and struck a vehicle towing a boat. The trike was northbound near mile 1.5 near The Wall. US129 was closed for several hours after the 5:30 PM accident while the scene was cleared. Another bike following the trike was also involved, but the rider refused treatment.
