Well I guy came out on Wednesday and found out my NIC was bad (we already knew that, right). He hooked me up via usb. He said my modem was 6 years old and I may get better speed with a new one. So I went to compusa and picked up a nic and a new motorola surfboard. Hooked up the nic and all was good. The next day I hooked up the new modem and called Comcast to register the mac. The guy said he couldnt register it for some unknown reason and elevated the issue. I asked about hooking up my old modem andhe couldnt do that for some reason. Called the next day--still nothing. Called today and the lady said, oh I know what it is.....2 seconds later it works. She cancelled my 2 prior "elevated issues". Idiots!!!!
Going to test the new modem now. If it's not faster, I'm gonna puke.

Did you get the 8mbps service?

Dude, if what you need is reliable service, Butler.net DSL FTW! It won't be as fast of a download, but I've had it for 5 years and only ever had two outages. And I know, because my system tracks performance 24/7. :)

Oh, and they'll match Bellsouth's rate too if you ask.
Mine is 3mpbs down / 384K up, with a static IP for $48/mo. I know it's not the best deal for speed, but I work from home so I need it to work more than I need the speed.

Dont test to the Hopkinsville server, i get better tests to atlanta.
but wireless will do odd things. You should get faster than that tho. Make sure you are all G everywhere. I even go so far as turning off the B network in the router all together to make sure nothing drags my speed down. but since your upload is good but your download bad....id say its not the laptop but maybe the router. get closer and try again.
i hate wireless

Probably because there's a major backbone running to ATL and yarn running to Hopkinsville.

I think they both suck... However, Charter is a JOKE... I've had to work with them before for some of my clients. They are teh dumb.

x2, and their business support is even worse.
We have a charter fiber line running as a backup to our T1's, and the line goes down at least once every couple weeks. Not to mention the people working in their NOC have no clue what is going on.
