I'm looking for the best software to convert movies. I've never been good at this so I'm looking at the one that is the easiest and quickest. I've got a program that a friend gave me, but I'm not very good with it and it takes FOREVER! I'm not looking for something that converts in HD quality. It's going to be on a 3.5" screen. As long as I can see and hear it I'm happy.

I'm not looking for freebees either. I'll pay for one as long as it's good quality. I do have a program all ready that disables the security and allows me to burn the movies, so that's not a problem.

I'm leaving for Puerto Rico Saturday and I'm wanting to be able to watch movies on the 6-7 hour trip on a c130. Help me please!

Well you are going to need something like dvd decryptor to rip the movie off the disk. then you can use dvd shrink or http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/ to convert it down to a m4v that the ipod can use. if you were on os x it would be even easier with handbrake and various other programs.

there is also http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/ that will convert. but the ripping part is the part that is "questionable" as ripping dvd's is still techincaly illegal by the DMCA. fair use has said not to pertain to ripping dvd's. but dvd decryptor is what id use

Technically it's allowed as long as it's movies that I've purchased, which they are.

I've heard that handbrake works really well, so I might end up using my wifes computer. Do any of these copy the movie from the dvd straight to mv4 format?

I've got software to copy, but I have to save the movie to my computer. After that, I'm able to convert the file. It takes a while to to the initial copy, then it takes FOREVER to convert the file. I currently have Xilisoft, which I don't really like.

I was also thinking about purchasing PQDVD.com software. Ever heard of it?

nope...technically its all illegal. the mpaa does not give you a license to rip the movie... seriously. but, it comes down to, will they actualy find you and try to prosecute you. if you read the license you get when you buy the movie, it is for viewing only. stupid crap i know. but thanks to the mpaa, riaa, and the dmca....we are all criminals.

handbrake does work pretty well, and one of the most automatic ways of doing it. remember you are encoding files. and that is HUGELY processor dependant. its like, set it at night and hope the pc doesnt overheat. if you have a new mac, use it. my macbook pro 2.33ghz takes about 2ish hours to encode at a high quality setting, if it was lower quality it would take longer
