I'll still wait until they have a few "must have" games out. I'm sure that the 360 will soon drop as well....
About time. However,
"Our initial expectation is that sales should double at a minimum," Jack Tretton, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said in an interview.
Typical Sony arrogance

I'm happy but not excited, $400 and it's sold. OK, I could probably do $450-$470.
edit: Apparently they'll be releasing an 80GB model in August that will include Motorstorm and will be $600.
They should've made it $479, or on par with the Elite.
That's a good idea. Then it would put the pressure on MS to bundle the HDDVD drive with the 360 some how. Uber Elite XTREME!!!

I went looking at games the other day, and there are a few new cool ones out.
F.E.A.R
Rainbow 6 Vegas
I'm sure I'm behind the times, but I like the first person shooters. There's also F1 out, which is BAD ASS. Is GT4 HD out yet? I didn't see it.
All the PS3 haters can STFU, it's a kick ass system and WAY better than the 360 as far as hardware vs hardware. Not to mention, you have to hack an Xbox to run anything but XOS. With the PS3, you can install Linux and they even give you a utility to do it with!
Fear is a pretty cool game on the PC, i'm sure the PS3's hardware could do it justice. Its an FPS though, some don't like FPSs.

Yeah, F.E.A.R. has been out a for a long time now on PC. When it first came out, it could bring even the most hardcore systems to their knees. I remember it being a pretty good game. Unfortunately, FPS's on consoles = teh suck....yeah, I said it Noize :noize:

Noize, I'll happily play you a few rounds of Halo on PC (or any other FPS for that matter) and show you the difference. And I'm not even THAT good. Wax was always much better at it than I was but he got a lot more play time that I did.

Yep. And I cut my teeth on Castle Wolfenstein and Doom. I have Halo and Unreal Championship on my XBox but I haven't played either of them in years. Plus I'm not willing to pay MS for Live and my hacked XBox would get banned pretty quick as well. I USED to be ok at them but never really good because I was used to mouse control.

Same here. My high school buddies used to get so pissed when I figured out the speed cheat (turbo 250) that would let you out run a rocket.
My point is that if you put a mouse FPS guy on a console, the controller guy will mop him up. Just like if you put a console guy on a PC with a mouse, he'll get killed. Its all about what you cut your teeth on.
What you are forgetting is that most console FPSs have some form of autoaim built in the normal guns (scoped guns excluded) be it in autoaim or giving all of the guns some form of splash damage. Meanwhile, the PC FPSs generally do not have autoaim.
I played the 360 more than the PC just so I could play games and stay in the living room with my wife. She gets lonely if I go into the bedroom to play on the PC.
I played all the way through Call of Duty 2 twice on the 360, and I started on halo 1 when it croaked. I prefer FPS's on the PC, but I find them almost as fun on a console -- until online play comes into the equation.
If its something that is pushing the art of computer graphics, 3D engines, or physics (like Half Life 2 or Doom 3 did) I prefer the PC in that instance. If it is something run-n-gun like Halo or GOW, a console will suffice in that instance.

Sony is apparently discontinuing the 60GB model so after those are sold out you'll still have to buy a $600 80GB PS3. Guess I'll be putting that off for another few years.

jumping in late here...
I'm interested in getting back into gaming. Haven't owned a system in a decade... played mostly computer (Tribes 1&2, America's Army, Battlefield 1942, etc.). Own a 40" 720p. Haven't stayed current on any of the systems, mostly because I haven't really been in the market for one.
PS3? 360? Where does everything stand nowadays? Benefits of one over the other? Game selection?
quick rundown of core vs. premium vs. elite?
are both online capable? gotta pay? wireless connections?
majikTib
07-13-2007, 09:56 AM
how does online play work? Is there a fee?
Does XBox have the HD DVD player? PS3 does, correct?
Is there a need for the 120GB HD? What info does it actually store on the HD?
it's 2007... why in the world don't they have wireless connection?
majikTib
07-13-2007, 10:37 AM
hm... interesting.
exactly the info I was looking for. WiFi is a big plus; ethernet is upstairs and I don't care to run it to the living room just for a console (and I don't care to pay $100 to add it as a feature). Already have a regular DVD player/surround sound system, but not sure how much nicer the HD DVDs are.
How does PS3 online game play work?
majikTib
07-13-2007, 12:01 PM
I might have to do that.
XBox Elite... WiFi modem for $60 at EB Games or Gamestop...
I heard there was a Halo version of the XBox coming out?
Forza or Forza2? What are other good online games for the 360? Other forums have told me 360 hands down, and now MS has the 3yr warranty which protects against the red ring of death.
majikTib
07-13-2007, 12:53 PM
so... who here plays 360 online? is there a thread started somewhere?
How easy is it to find people online? Is there a buddy list feature or do you have to organize a server and a time for everyone to meet on it?
Guess I need to start searching for an XBox Elite now....

Because of the problems and warranty recently offered by MS, I doubt they'll lower prices of XBox. They need the revenue to cover their $1.15B of warranty claims

Microsoft announces July 11, 2007 there will be no price cuts for XBox 360
MSFT reports earnings on July 19, 2007. Depending on market reaction and ability to meet expectations, they may change their minds after July 19th.

Microsoft said July 5 that it will take a charge of up to $1.15 billion to its fourth-quarter earnings to address what it called an "unacceptable" number of Xbox repairs.
MSFT said that it will reimburse Xbox customers who have paid for repairs resulting from the failure, and the company expanded its warranty program for machines experiencing the failure from one year to three years.
Along with news of the technical failure, Microsoft also announced that it came in shy of prior estimates of Xbox sales, with 11.6 million sold by the end of June. The company said in January that it expected to sell 12 million consoles by the end of June.

Well they'll all say that there won't be any price cuts because they don't want people to stop buying in order to wait for the cut to come.
All kinds of mixed information is out there. Sony said there wouldn't be a price cut and sure enough the 60GB PS3 dropped $100 so it's difficult to trust what anyone is saying.

.
The PS3 online has an optional Bluetooth earpiece, which is really sweet. The 360 has a wired headset that connects to the front of the wireless controller, but at least it is included with the system.
One great thing about the PS3 is that it is really backwards compatible, so you can play ALL PS2 and PS1 games, so software support in that regard is awesome. But the PS2 will play all those games as well, comes with a modem, and is like $120 or something. ;)
Microsoft has a wireless headset avail too - like $50 but works well (had mine for about 4-5 months now)
The 80GB PS3 will not be as backwards compatible, because they are taking out the emotion engine and going software based (euro models of PS3were like this from launch) like the 360. You will have to d/l updates to play old games and not all will be supported, especially at first (like the 360 was when it came out). Good thing about the 360 is that almost anything decnt from orignal xbox is supported now.
If you want a PS3, buy a $499 60GB before they go away, and haxxor it and add a bigger hard drive.

all point to price drop by thanksgiving IMO. MS may also do it to curb the newer ps3 saleswhen it comes out. Thought they had let some rumors out as well about a price cut at E3. I hope so, I'd like to get one for the kids for christmas.................and I must play Halo 3;).

http://communities.canada.com/shareit/blogs/gamesnews/archive/2007/07/19/ps3-sales-pass-xbox-360-a-week-after-price-drop.aspx
PS3 sales pass Xbox 360 a week after price drop
Playstation 3 sales passed the Xbox 360 last week, largely due to it's $100 price cut and strong showing at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo.
Sony sold 41,005 Playstation 3 consoles, while Microsoft held on to only 35,084 Xbox 360's for the week ending July 14, according to analysts at Video Game Chartz (http://www.vgchartz.com/aweekly.php?date=39278). Nintendo led the pack yet again selling 76,394 Nintendo Wii's.
Sony's bump was quite significant, as the previous week (http://www.vgchartz.com/aweekly.php?date=39271)the Playstation 3 only managed to sell 17,770 units, half the amount as the Xbox 360.
While Sony may be enjoying the first major upswing for their system since last year's Holiday season, the results may only be temporary, as the Playstation 3 may not stay (http://communities.canada.com/shareit/blogs/gamesnews/archive/2007/07/13/sony-phasing-out-60-gigabyte-playstation-3.aspx) at $499 for long.
Sony will be phasing out their 60 gigabyte model of the Playstation 3 by the end of the month which may negate any effects that resulted from the $100 price cut (http://communities.canada.com/shareit/blogs/gamesnews/archive/2007/07/08/sony-cuts-playstation-3-price-to-499-introduces-599-80-gigabyte-bundle.aspx).
yea, but it'll only last until the 60gigs are gone. when the only one is the 80gig for $600+games+controllers the sales will slack off again

I keep reading about price drops. I picked up the September 07 issue of the official XBox magazine and it has a few articles in it regarding inevitable price drops, and whether it'll be before the holidays.
Is there anywhere (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.) that has a price guarantee? If it drops the week after I buy it, will they refund the difference? I really want to wait for the drop, but I really want a freakin' XBox Elite
Do you think the price drop will be for all models, or just Core and Premium?

I'm waiting until at least the end of oct and maybe until thanksgiving. With that big of sales swing last month microsoft almost has to act to maintain market share. I bet they wait until after Halo 3 is released because that game alone will generate sales of all 360's. I'll end up with the game before I even have a system:lol:.

One article:
According to Sony’s data, PS3 sales have increased by more than 135 percent at the company's top five retailers since the new $499 price was announced (http://www.dailytech.com/Sony+Announces+80GB+PlayStation+3+Bundle+Confirms+ Price+Cut/article7964.htm) two weeks ago on July 9.
The surge in PS3 sales helped to send total PlayStation hardware up 161 percent, software up 15 percent and peripherals by 60 percent.
Other article:
http://www.dailytech.com/Nintendo+DS+Wii+Continue+Hardware+Sales+Lead+for+J une/article8150.htm
The sales numbers released by research firm NPD Group for June continue to highlight Nintendo’s current strength in the market. Both the Nintendo DS and Wii lead all of its competitors in terms of software and hardware sales.
The XBox sales were HALF of the Wii sales. The PS2 had more sales than the XBox 360 (http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/33036/98/).
Sales:
PS2 > XBox
Nintendo > Microsoft
PSP > XBox
DS > XBox
The top 4 games sold in June were Nintendo games, #5 was MS' Forza
XBox is going to have to do something to stay in the fight. If they keep getting all the negative publicity on the Wii and PS having better increases, maybe they'll be pushed to price drop?

My son plays his PSP more than any other but ofcourse he can't wait for a 360. The PSP is kinda cool and looks good but I don't like small games. My kids never really cared for the DS. Have you really played a Wii? It is addictive. Both my kids love the Wii esp my daughter because it is far easier for her to win than on the xbox.
Then again you ARE 34 and should be doing something more constructive than playing video games. You should take up gardening:D.

RE4 on the Wii flat out rocks! Sure the graphics aren't HD quality, but when the gameplay is addictive, who cares?
I think the Wii is a home run, hands down. The DS to a lesser extent. Nintendo is now able to sell video games to people that aren't gen x'ers. There's a reason why you still can't find one.
Its gonna take an act of congress for me to be able to get another 360. I was able to sell the wifey on a Wii much easier, because it includes her in the game. She loves playing tennis.

Xbox spec: $50 cut in Aug
In an effort to regain momentum in the video game console market, Microsoft Corp. will cut the price of the Xbox 360 by $50 early next month, sources said.
The reduction will be made Aug. 8, according to one source in the retail world, noting that the cut will come during what traditionally has been one of the slower times of the year for game hardware sales.
Asked to comment, a Microsoft spokesman said: "We have no announcements to make on pricing at this time. While price matters, content is king. And no other system is offering all the games people want to play this holiday at a better price than Xbox 360."
Still unclear is whether the cut will be made to all three versions of the Xbox 360 on the market. The Core model, which accounts for about 20% of Xbox 360 sales, retails for $299; the best-selling Pro model sells for $399, and the Elite model is about $479.

I bought a Wii Sunday, and my wife and I love it. We got it for the same reason above, we BOTH can play it. My sister came over last night and she tried boxing, but that didn't work out all that good. I still like my Xbox, but the Wii is a different kind of system.
