Is anyone here a surveillance expert? I'm wanting to put up some cameras at the house, and don't know what to get. I do know I want more than the X10 style junk, but I also don't want to spend thousands.
Stuff I want:
Cameras with decent quality and wireless and 1 that will pan, tilt, zoom.
DVR, with remote view accross the internet. I'd rather not do it via PC, but will if that's the best cost option
I only need to support 4 or less cameras
Any suggestions?

I have no help, but this sounds like something my parents need. In for the tech! :)

Last time I checked, you weren't in the hood. You going to put up a chain link fence with a Pit Bull that eats gun powder next?

check into video flashlight... there are similar solutions for smaller scale scenarios
you can have several cameras but only one monitor, the software takes all the digital feeds and combines them into one birds eye view. you can set up virtual perimeters and all kinds of cool stuff. if a threat is detected, it is outlined with a digital marker and no matter where the threat moves, it is illuminated on the 3d virtual map.
i worked this project a couple years back. lots of neat applications - think virtual border, RFID tags, automated chain guns, you get the idea...

if ultra low buck is the goal, just set the cams up with motion sensors. they stay on all the time, but only record when a motion sensor is triggered. you can set up a webpage that shows the feeds. would be something like a traffic cam that you can access via the web. with some cool coding, you could have an activated cam image sent to your cell.

That's pretty cool, but I'm guessing that it isn't open source. I'm looking at something for the house. ;)

Unless your looking to spend 6-10k do what I did. We have the system from Sam's club. I think it was around 800-1000$. Comes with 2 outdoor 2 indoor or I think you can get 4 outdoor. We have the one where I can view via internet live from anywhere. It has a 6-9month of recording memory and play back. Qualitly is good aswell. very good considering the whole system runs around 1k

There are cameras available now that are a network device. They call them "IP Cameras" Not sure if they are available wireless. PC is the best option for camera control and DVR. A standalone DVR is MONEY. Also, to view and control the video remotely, you will need a VPN like GoToMyPC.com or similar.
Now, if you want some professional products, I have a source...but his contact info is on my work computer at the office.
