So, On my "backup" desktop. I have it in my room to do homework on in silence. It was pretty good system, and work flawlessly for a few years now. I havent' turned it one but maybe 3-4 times all summer. I fired it up to get some pics off of it from when it was my primary PC. Fires up just fine, I can do anything with it . But, as soon as I plugged in a USB device to offload the pics, I get a blue screen and nothing else. Won't do anything.

Help?

reboot, dont plug in usb device.....backup data just in case. sounds like a driver issue/conflict with the card reader

thats what happens when you try to transfer porn and its linked to a virus

it could be a few things, including that you shocked the computer [ive done this a few times with my thumb drives], or that there was a read/write error

try grounding the flash drive with something metal in the area .... try plugging it in at a later time [like once youve run a few programs] ... try plugging it in BEFORE you turn it on

tried plugging it in before I booted and same thing.

How can I "back it up"??

back up the computer? external drive ... and make sure System Restore is enabled just incase ...

backup the flash drive? not possible really ... find a computer that it wont crash

make sure the drivers for the flash drive are installed on the computer before you use it - and try using it in a different USB port ... sometimes one port will get more power than another [very common in Mac's] and it will only run proper on certain ports

That's what I was doing. i got a 160GB drive that I was going to put all of my pics and stuff on from all of my computers. That's when I found this problem.

When i first tried, I used the USB on the back, then later the one in front. Same thing.

do you have anyone else's USB drives that you can test? the ports could be shot ... ive never heard of this happening myself, but anything is a possibility with the way they make motherboards these days

if worst comes to worst and you REALLY need to get crap off your hard drive, take it out and put it into another computer and transfer them that way

I have 3. None work.

I thought about pulling the HD'sand seeing if I could pop one in my newer PC.

I would try installing the latest chipset drivers on your pc. Do you know what make/model motherboard you have?

you need to trade all your computers for a nice abacus

pull drive and put it in as a slave in another computer, or go buy an enclosure to put it in. You could also try downloading a linux live cd like knoppix or ubuntu and boot it with that, and you can get your data off onto either a thumb drive, or share out the hard drive and get it over the network

Bring the drives you need to copy up to Nashville this weekend.

I have an ATA -> USB adapter and we can get all the files you need backed up to whatever drives you prefer.
