My router died last week. Should I get another Linksys, or something else?

You might want to take a look at the Buffalo Wireless routers. Everything on the net has nothing but good things to say about them and I have two guys at work that have them and say they out preform linksys handsdown. And you can hack them and open up all kinds of settings and double the power output so your range will increase.

I am running a netgear on 4 computers, 2 hard wired 2 wireless, in my house. Setup was easy, speed is great...picked it up for $40 plus tax at Circuit City.

I have a brand new Linksys 802.11g router. I took it out of the box and plugged it in to make sure it worked before going to install it. I bought it to do a wireless install at someone's house. They backed out and I've pretty much taken myself out of the computer side work game.

WRT54G is the model number. $50 shipped?

Picked up today for $40? That's what I was going to pay at Best Buy...

Oh.. nah, just get the BB router. $40 is a good deal. I'll save mine and charge someone the $60 I paid at Staples if/when I ever do another wireless install.

Plus mine is at home in MJ.

What is involved in "wireless install"? We just bought the wife a new laptop with wireless capability. Right now it's plugged into our cable modem but sooner or later (probably sooner) it's going to be relocated to another room and it will have to go wireless internet. I got no idea. School me please.

I dont like linksys all that much anymore but thats just me. One problem is you cant get more than 4mb out of most of them, and I have 6mb comcast.

id go with buffalo.

and you say you router died....how so? there are lots of things that could be fixed other than the magical blue smoke came out, you cant put that back in.

im a big linux geek...so i run a small computer as my router and then do a wireless access point. if you have an old PC i always recomend that route :D

as for you HemiRam...if you dont have any router at all...just plugged computer into cable modem, get one NOW. Dont wait, dont think about it, just go get one. Pick up a linksys, dlink, netgear, anything. A non firewalled non nat routed pc plugged straight into a bare internet connection lasts all of 3-5 mins before its already infected with something.

1. Buy router
2. Plug into modem
3. Turn on router & computer. Computer should find network and join it, and you're done if you don't mind other people potentially borrowing your bandwidth. If not, go here (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/support/wireless_secure.htm).

Plug computer into modem, it gets out fine. Plug router into modem, computer into router, no internet - but the wireless network works fine computer to computer.

Resetting doesn't do anything. I can't get the admin password to come up, and I don't remember the account info even if I could.

Fixing it sounds great, and I'd love to know how to do it, but I don't want to spend much if any time screwing with it. This router routinely looses the internet anyway, having to be "bounced" (unplugged/restarted) to get out at least once a week. In short, it's worth $40 for me to get the network at home fixed tonight. Given time, I might play with the router that's "dead," especially since I never throw anything away. But unless I can guarantee my wife reliable connectivity within the same 30 minute window it'll take me to get a new one set up, I don't really care to climb the learning curve of flashing it with *nix and wading through acres of documentation only to find out the things dead anyway.

reset button on router should reset account login to default "admin" password
192.168.1.1 - does that not do anything?

keep current router... may be able to use it as a wireless relay ??

Nope, doesn't do anything. 192.168.1.1 does pull up a Management Mode - Firmware upgrade screen, but I grabbed the latest firmware .bin file off linksys.com and tried to apply it, and all I get is "upgrade failed." Doesn't get to the configuration screen.

If I can get it to do anything, I'll use it as a WAP in the shop...

i saw that on sunday from a friend. leave power in. hold in reset button for 5 seconds or longer. it will reset. once it comes back up power cycle it again, pull power cord. Then the web page should come up. I bet we can get it working. If you want i can do some phone support later today. or this weekend i might be able to even be persuaded to come up and help ya :)

really theres not much difference between routers ... i love my Belkin, but ive also had good experience with Linksys

theyre not complicated devices, and pretty much all mainstream companies make the correctly :)

get whatever is currently on-sale in a local store

i swear it happened just like that to my friend. she called and it had that. i had her do a reset. then a power cycle. and it just worked. ... odd. but i get off around 4-5. usually home around 5-6. anytime after 5 is usually good for me

Woot! Got my $40 Netgear router hooked up last night. A little more complicated than the 1 ... 2 ... 3 setup above, but not bad. I was running all over the house with the laptop seeing if I had connection. I felt like the guy on the phone commercials - "Can you hear me now?". Only I was more like "Can I connect here?". I'm a dork.

If you don't lock down your wireless internet, anyone could sit outside of your house and surf the internet, download child pron, and do other illegal activities.

The manual that came with your router should tell you how to set it up.

make sure you are not putting a username in when you are asked for the login. Just blank username and put in admin for the password

Yes, there is a difference, and no don't get what is currently on sale... unless its a name brand like Linksys or Netgear.

Its about support after the fact. What happens when they finally nail down draft N and you bought Venom5's Brand Backwoods Router? Good luck finding a firmware update.

LOL ..... I figured that was where you were going. I saw a section in the manual that walks you thru that. I was just too beat last night to mess with it. I'll work on that tonight.

Surely I'm safe for a night or two. My only real concern is Reef lives down the street. Lord only knows what would happen if he tapped in.

He would probably make the router point everything to the goatse or lemonparty page

p.s. if you don't know what these are, do not search for them while your at work . :D

I've changed the "root" IP address on mine - should this reset it back to 192.168.1.1? It doesn't...but I'll try the blank username & "admin" again when I get home.

The modern world can be divided into two camps: those that have seen goatse and those that haven't. I, unfortunately, fall in to the "have seen it" category. And now that I think about it, I'm fairly sure Reef was the culprit on this site many years ago.

ive seen odd things happen. i go though a voodoo dance of resetting it 3 or 4 times sometimes. ill do a reset by holding in the reset button for 5 seconds or longer. Then after it does its thing ill power cycle. then sometimes do it a couple more times. but like I said, i bet we can fix anything :D

LinkSys WRV200 a little more expensive than other however it is geared to commercial office environment and has been way more reliable than the last one I had and is really fast. I can sustain 100mbs data transfer rate through the router. The wireless also works better

All routers are not created equally. I get every bit of the 6mb comcast rate and the 12mb boost rate through my router. It was more than 100.00 and worth ever penny of it. I was resetting the old linksys router every week. It is set up for a second wireless access point and it needs to be reset every time I want to use it.

^ ive setup several routers for friends with Comcast .... no loss, no problems, no bs with Linksys, Belkin and D-Link

so maybe you just have bad luck? or you got a bad router

bowlcut
09-10-2007, 01:20 PM
nope...take a linksys, ive not tried a brand brand new one, but every linksys ive tested in the last 2 or 3 years.... you go to any speed test site, and you only get 4mb. i pay for 6mb plus speed boost. you take said computer, remove the router and go straight to the modem...you get the full speed.

its not a matter of drops or packet loss....its a matter of the fact that linksys wan link is 10mb only, and its processor is also limited in the ammount of power it has.

Rascal did you get that old linksys working yet?

hmm i think one more reset or two....then a power cycle or two...i bet it would be 100%. then again id likely say screw it all and load dd-wrt or the such on it :D im a 1337 haX0r tho
