My connection has been dropping at home like alot. Like every 20 minutes it will drop. If I unplug my Linksys router and plug it back in it will start working again. When it goes down, the lights on the cable modem and router all look normal. I have Comcast. Any tips for troubleshooting this?

Mine started doing this recently on Xbox Live. Its these bullshat Motorola Surfboards. WORST MODEMS EVaR.

That's the weird thing though, I've never had xbox live go down:confused:

Have you tried plugging the modem directly into the computer? Does this do any better or does it do the same stuff?

x2 on the surfboard modems sucking.

My last Surfboard lasted me 6 years before it started having issues. Just replaced it a few months ago with a new Surfboard and my connection is better than ever.

A friend's Linksys router crapped out on him, it would drop the net connection until it was unplugged and powered back on. Apparently the Linksys routers aren't the greatest because I've heard of other people having issues with them.

Yeah I think I need to contact Linksys. I have tried going around the router once and it worked fine, but haven't tried it every time the net drops since i figured out resetting the router fixes it. My last Linksys wired router lasted 5 years before it crapped out. I've had the wireless about 5 months :(

have you checked for any firmware updates?

you shouldnt have to update it ... but sometimes that will make enough changes to fix the router when it starts acting ****ty

Before you go around messing with the linksys check your power settings for the nic it could be going to sleep I had this happen to me before.

Goto Control Panel --> Network Connections --> Local Area Connection properties (make sure it's the one that says it's connected).

Click on "Configure" for your network adapater. There should be an advanced tab. Go thru the settings related to power and sleep, ensure that the network adapter is not set to "sleep" to conserve power.

it's your router, not your modem. some kind of degradation of the dns gateway on the wireless side... RMA it if you can, otherwise, get a new one

p.s. - if you've got a lot of cellphones/wireless phones in your house, they interfere with wireless routers

same thing happened to me when i was living with my parents
