It's a Cannon Rebel EOS XTI. I'm just getting my feet wet with it. The tree pictures are without flash using a slow shutter speed! Pretty neat.

Now start experimenting with your aperture and exposure compensation settings! That's where the fun starts. :)

Here's a few I just took while goofing off with the 70-200 lens.

I've got some camera books that I told your husband that I'd send you guys. As soon as I dig them up, I'll do so. :)

Really, the best way to learn is to hook up with someone who has some experience and is willing to teach you... and then play, play, play with it. The great thing about digital is that it's free to shoot as much as you want. :D

go get the 50mm 1.8 and put it on and never take it off till you have a good idea of how to work things. it will reward you to no end, and at like 75 dollars and super nice for the price. and will help you learn as its a fixed lense and you can concentrate on other things. get it, set it on apature priority, and just mess with that for a month. then set it to shutter priority and mess with that for a while....then combine it later on

The Thrifty Fifty is a great little lens and every Canon DSLR owner should have one, but honestly you can learn just as easily on any other kit lens as you can with that one. The big advantage of that particular lens is the stupid wide aperture that you can shoot with for under $100. Perfect for low light, fast action or if you just want a "walk around" lens that doesn't protrude a foot out in front of the camera body.

Some things that Julie (and other n00b DSLR owners) can use as a quick reference when deciding what mode to shoot in...

Aperture Priority [Av]

Use this when capturing depth of field is important. Do you want more of the scene in focus? Set for small aperture (higher f-Stop #). Do you want less of the scene in focus and emphasis on the main focal point subject? Set for larger aperture (smaller f-Stop #). That photo of the ornament in the last post was shot at f/2.8 with the focal point being the gold ornament itself. Notice how everything beyond the ornament is blurry. That's the effect of shooting with a larger aperture.

Larger aperture (smaller f-Stop #) will suffer from motion blur less than a smaller aperture (larger f-Stop #).

When shooting in low lighting in Aperture Priority if you want to minimize motion blur, you want to use one or more combinations of: Smaller f-Stop #, less exposure and faster ISO speed.

Shutter (Time) Priority [Tv]

Use this when capturing a sense of motion, or freezing motion, is most critical. A longer shutter delay will let more light into the camera and provide a brighter exposure, but will also cause blurring of the photo with any motion of either the camera or the subject.

A shorter shutter delay will let less light into the camera and provide a darker exposure, but will also "freeze" motion and provide a more crisp photograph of a moving subject. A shorter (faster) shutter combined with a faster ISO speed is a good tool to use when shooting in low lighting conditions to mitigate blurring of the photo from camera movement.

Again, you can also adjust your exposure compensation up or down to brighten or darken the photo depending on the circumstances and your desires.

...

Like I've said, the key is playing and experimenting. Try dialing in more or less exposure and see how it affects the photo. Try a slower shutter when shooting things like running water and see how it gives a sense of motion to the flow. :)

Yeah I wasn't sure if that was intentional or if the shutter was just too slow for the lighting conditions. That sort of blurring happens a lot by accident when the photographer shoots at too low of an ISO speed or with too little aperture for the lighting conditions.

I do have a few pics that I took lastnight, just haven't gotten around to posting them yet. The picture with Brooke and Molly was intentional for the most part. I was playing with setting to see if I could get the motion. I did that a few times before that picture was taken but they just looked like ghosts.

I'll take the same shot multiple times with different settings and look at em later to see which comes out best. I don't take the extra time to review on screen so I won't miss anything

Wow, if this keeps up we'll need a photography forum.

FWIW, I just got my sister a D40x with 18-55mm kit lens for Xmas. :D It's supposed to have the same chip as the D80, so her images should be comparable to mine. :)

If you all need a wide lens, I suggest the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DG HSM. It's affordable and makes great images.

Shot with Nikon D80 and Sigma 10-20mm

FYI, I saw the same camera at Best Buy today for $699. My Nikon D40x was the same price, REALLY wish I would have got the Canon though :( it's much nicer

I need a tripod... is a tripod just a tripod? Will a $25 plastic one work just as good as a $300 tripod? I don't get the differences, as long as it holds the camera steady.

whitestanggirl

That's a good question. I'd like to know as well. The one I have, I bought off Ebay for $14. I'm not sure how better an expensive one is, but the one I have seems to do the trick ok. I did have problems with it lastnight when I was trying to get the shot of the moon, because it was pretty much right overhead, and I couldnt' get the tripod to adjust straight up, but I lowered one of the legs and was able to get the shot.

Circuit City has the D40x kit with 18-55mm lens for $609.99 and shipping is free, or you can pick it up at the store. They won't give you that price in the store, it's online only.

I got my sister one for Christmas. :D

Tripod, there are some better that have a ball head, marks in degrees for panoramas, levels, etc., but you'll pay for those extra functions. Just make sure not to buy too small of a tripod because a heavy camera with a long zoon (like my Sigma 135-400mm) would be too much for it and they tend to wiggle too easy in the wind.

Another must have is a remote shutter release. That and the tripod will make better images. ;)
