Wife got me a speedlite 430EX for christmas so i have been messing around with my pets trying to practice. I never have done any flash photography before and it definitely is as tricky as they say.

Maybe bounce the flash a little more off of an adjoining wall and/or the ceiling and put a diffuser over the flash head. That might help take some of the reflection out of the dog's eyes and pull away some of the shadows in that last shot.

What Tungsten said. When I was shooting film (I know, before there was electricity...) I used a silk hankie to cover my flash, more layers = less flash and a more diffused flash effect. Crude, but effective.

I think the middle one is the best (to my taste). Would suggest that next time you might try cranking your f more open (lower number) and "fuzz" the background so that the subject is the best focused. BTW, that shot is a perfect example of the "rule of thirds".

You have done well, grasshopper... :)

I actually had a diffuser on that time and bounced the light off the wall to my right, but still couldnt quite get it to where i wanted it. But it was the best of the 20 shots i took from there trying diff angles. So I still need to experiment much more.
