NICE! What happened to the 80?

The D80 is still there and has not been replaced yet. The D60 is the updated D40/D40x.

Just like the D80 was a D200 inside, the next (D90?) version will probably have the D300 guts. ;)

The D60 isn't at the dealers yet. They are taking pre-orders though.

Are you looking for a DSLR right now? :)

If a D90 comes out with D300 guts in a plastic body like the D80/D200 setup was I'm all over it!

Honestly for what I do with my camera I dont need the magnesium weatherproof case, so a D90 would be incredible for me. I need to keep a closer eye on Nikons site.

We agree on a lot of things.

To me on the issues of choosing between two cameras like the D200/D80 that are basically the same except for the weather sealing and a few small features, I look at it like this.

The D200/D300 are for pros that treat and use their gear as a tool in all kinds harsh environments. They need the stronger frame so they can toss their gear around every day without fear of breaking it, and the sealing for outdoor moisture and dust protection.

Guys like us will never need or want to drag our gear out in dusty, rainy, and otherwise harsh environments. I only shoot when it's nice outdoors anyway. :)

So yes, between a D300 or a D90 with the same guts and features, I’ll take the D90. It's all I need and probably will be more light weight than a D300. :D

Now Nikon needs to hurry up and announce this thing. :hyper:

No need... I'm on Nikon.com & NikonCafe every day. As soon as it gets announced, I'll be in here post-whoring the info for you dudes!

BTW, did you get the D80 updates? See the other thread (http://www.tennesspeed.net/forums/showthread.php?t=43308) if not. :)

I have a D200 and my boss just bought a D300. The D300 is amazing. This is his first DSLR and as a result he accidentally shot everything at ISO2000 the other day. The pictures had as much noise and maybe less than my camera does at ISO800. On top of that the colors were amazing.

If a D90 comes out I may be selling my D200 that I have had less for than 3 months. Although I should be saving for some new lenses.

Well if the D90 comes out and it is just a D300 I will definetly be upgrading. Prob. keep the D40 for a back up. Doubt I could get any real money out of it.

I agree with this, and Mike was a benefactor of my selling my near-mint D100 with lens for $500.00 (yeah, he got lucky).

I'm currently looking at pro-body cameras, but can't justify the D3 (yeah right), and won't have a D2X after comparing it to the D300. I just wish that they had a D3-styled body with D300 guts.

Does anyone know if they're going to come out with something between the D300 and the D3? That's right where I need to be... and I'm afraid to purchase a D300 and outgrow it (like my D100), so I've been sitting, waiting, saving.

I haven’t heard any news about a new model between the D300 (http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25432) and D3 (http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25434). There has been talk of a D3x in the 20mp+ range, but you know that'll be an $8,000 camera and even harder to justify.

The bottom line is the D300 (http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25432) is a great tool that makes superior images compared to its previous models and is only beat by $5k+ full frame pro bodies. That said, I wouldn't wait around for Nikon to come up with anything since historically they're really slow about bringing new models out.

Besides, you could be making great images right now with a D300 (http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25432) if you choose to go that route. Get it and make the Canon sack-riders cry with envy.

If you're a ballAR, ante up and get the D3 (http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25434) with the AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED (http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=5&productNr=2163) & AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mmf/2.8G ED (http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=5&productNr=2164) to start.

any recomendations on a good starter kit. I'm really wanting to go DSLR and Have always liked nikon's. Any good forums or links would be appreciated. Also, what are yalls thoughts on the ebay starter kits. Is the D40x worth the buy or should I step it up. I have a little understanding of camera's and how they work. I've learned to shoot in manual mode on my p&s. So I'm not completely dumb to photography. Thanks

I got my sister a D40x for Xmas. It makes awesome images (as good as a D80/D200). But my complaint is (on the D40/D40x/D60) the funky user interface where you have to push the info button and make adjustments on the rear display.

Maybe I'm just used to the top display menu, but that really bugs the piss out of me.

If it's within your budget, get the Nikon D80 (http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25412). If not, get the D40X or the D60 (http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25438) (D60 is the new version of the D40 (http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25420) and D40x (http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25424)).

You can get any of the above with the 18-55 or 18-135 kit lenses. Or you can buy the back alone and get a better lens.

Good forum is www.nikoncafe.com and there is one called nikonians (if I spelled that right)

Adorama and B&H Photo would be great places online to buy from.

D300 + grip would take care of almost anything you'd ever need. Unless a D90 comes out thats where I'm headed in another year or so probably.

For starters I'd really look into at least a D80 (new) or a used D50 or D70/D70s. I can't stand the fact that there aren't separate aperture/shutter wheels on the D40/D40x, but then again I'm used to what I have. Starting from scratch would be fine for most people. I think a D60 + 18-135mm would be a killer starter setup.

D40/D40x only auto focus only for AF-S or AF-I lenses. You can use other lenses you just wont be able to autofocus. Good cameras though.

Oh trust me - I've got the lenses to justify the camera, especially one in particular. There will be NO CanNon nutswingers as far as I'm concerned... ha! Nikon Front, UNITE!

I use this for alot of my Commercial stuff. This served me well in college, and gave me an unfair advantage over those attempting to lug the studio gear around with a diital back. I absolutely LOVE this lens:

I'll second this - I've bought all of my gear from B&H since 2000, and will continue to buy. They're no-BS, no-grief policies are helpful, as well.
