View Full Version : How do you take pictures of the moon?
So after hearing about the Total Eclipse that is happening tommorrow night. I figured I would try to snap pics of it tonight to try it out. A group of friends are planing on going to the beach to see the eclipse tommorrow so I wanted to get a good shot of it. I took some and this is how they turned out...
:\
Zoomed all the way in.

Speed up the shutter, zoomed out alittle.

More speed, less zoom

and again

Moonie 11 rule:
1/100 sec, F11, ISO 100
Use a tripod. If no tripod, increase shutter speed and lower F-stop
ISO only goes to 200. :\ And F9.

f9 is a weird stop. Try f8, 1/100 sec, iso 200
when you say 1/100 is that shutter speed? I really need to read up on this stuff. Cause my camera will go from 100 - 2000
Maybe Ill just use my big ass 35mm tommorrow night.

Feel lucky you camera can zoom in enough... my 18-55 kit lens won't even begin to give me enough range. :(

ITs hard to feel luckey when you dont even know how to use it all the time.

135mm on a DX format sensor (near 200mm equivalent) won't even begin to get close. I need a converter. Best I can get is about the size posted above. I really would like something in the 600-900mm equivalent range to get a good shot up close and fully filling the frame. My camera actually meters the moon very well as long as it's on a focus point. What equipment are you working with?

Holy balls, that Atlanta Moon shot is in tight. Incredible.
This was posted by "Loweredshadow" on another board, FullThrottleForums, details in the post on what he used...

300mm + 3x converter, 900mm effective? Who knows on a digital sized sensor? Either way thats as close as he got. Can't imagine what it took to get that Atlanta Moon shot.

I've seen that shot, Josh. He posted it on Digital Grin, also.
I've seen some amazing things done with astrophotography. Maybe we should all chip in and buy us a telescope. Looks like all we'd need is the Canon and the Nikon mounts. That would cover all of us here (I think).
