I got my Nikon SB-28 speedlight in over the weekend so last night I snapped a few quick test shots before crashing out.

I cut all the lights in the room on first and took a full powered flash shot and that one strobe easily overpowered the entire room light. Flash power = good. :)

So then I tried a few things, one more dramatic lighting example on a self portrait and one more balanced fill lighting on a shot of my g/f's cat Lucy. Bonus shot of the cat in devil mode...

Self-portrait (Nikon SB-28 on camera, 1/2 power flash, ~75 degree ceiling bounce, bare flash, dramatic post effect to enhance flash and highlights)

Headshot of Lucy (Nikon SB-28 on camera, 1/4 power flash, 45 degree angle with Sto-Fen OmniBounce)

Satan's spawn (those socks have been one of my ankles more times that I care to think about lest there be bloodshed)

ugliest lolcat evar  You get those triggers Josh? I haven't done any cars yet, but looking forward to when it gets warmer. I also picked up a flash meter that speeds things up a bit.

I really need to get a flash meter. I can see it coming in very handy.

No triggers yet. I believe I'm going to go with the Cactus V2s poverty wizards. Relatively inexpensive and I'm also going to pick up a pair of Sunpak 383s to go with this SB-28 and a trio of 8' light stands. I got set back as my March "fun money" budget got shot when I had to miss a few days of work last week. Now it's bills and savings and I'll allow myself some fun money next month.
