We wrapped up our week in Asheville, NC at the Biltmore Estate. Very neat place but it was seriously disappointing that the management forbids taking any sort of pictures inside the Biltmore house itself. No still shots, no video, not even without flash.

One of my co-workers suggested that it is more for security so that people don't take photos to "case the joint" but I think it's because they want you to buy their photo books at the gift shop. Those books never have the weird shots that we like. :reef:

I think that the Biltmore management could make a killing if they sold wrist bands or something that identified you as having paid more money for the privilege of being able to shoot photos inside. They already charge you an additional fee for each of the different tours that they offer inside the house, so what's another fee for being able to take your own pictures?

They just said I couldn't take pictures inside... they never said I couldn't take pictures of the inside from the outside. :D

very cool pics! I have almost taking my wife several times.

question... does anyone know what the heck the story is behind the chain? is it to keep the water flowing into the barrel during a drizzle or something?

Water follows the chain down. It's a rudimentary downspout. :)

When I get home I'll have to post the B&W shots I made at dusk out there...creepy!

3rd and 5th shots are EXCELLENT David. I've been to the Biltmore before and really enjoyed it. It's been a while though, the pictures make we want to go again.

Thanks. :) Yeah we both want to go back. The next time we do, we're going to take our time and explore the basement of the house a little better (we were rushed on our guided tour) and then spring for the "Behind The Scenes" tour and spend more time outside on the grounds.

After a while, you sort of get tired of seeing bedrooms and bathrooms, especially since you aren't allowed to shoot any photos indoors. :(

Awesome photos!

I got to visit some of the other Vanderbilt family estates when I was in Newport, RI this fall. Amazing what sibling rivalry and WAY too much money will produce

I've heard that the other home(s) are just as spectacular, if not as big.

Cool pictures. I want to go sometime. My brother and his wife have been and say pictures cannot do it justice.

Sucks not being able to take pics inside. I got caught one time in the Henry Ford estate taking pictures without permission. You can take pics if you're on the tour but not if you're just visiting the gift shop which is inside the house on the lower level. I spent a lot of money in the gift shop and have paid for the tour on subsequent visits so I didn't feel too bad about. The little 90 year old lady was real nice about it...

They claim the flash over time can damage paintings, wallpaper and fabrics???? Graceland allows pictures but only without the flash which really sucked in the car museum because it is so dark in there.

You'd think you could get away with it once or twice, but they actually watch people very closely.

I love that place, and the behind the scenes tour is well worth it, both of them. Getting out on the roof was very cool. Touching the slate...oh yea thats cool.

And i kept hearing the reason for no photo's is people with flash. That it will over time wash out all the decorations inside, and fade them faster than they are fading now. Or thats the last offical word i heard
