GM says it could go faster in some places still.

It's official.

Tadge J. Juechter, Corvette's chief engineer, announced this morning that Jim Mero, GM's development engineer, drove the ZR1 around the Nurburgring in 7:26.4. According to the GMNext blog, the run took place earlier this morning and that conditions were good on the track, with the exception of a strong headwind down the main straight. Mero mentioned that he felt there were a few places where he could have gone faster, although no details were provided about why and where.

Juechter makes it clear that the ZR1 that lapped the 'Ring was instock trim, with the exception of safety and communications equipment. As such, the ZR1 was wearing the same Michelin Pilot Sport 2s found on the production model, the chassis alignment and vehicle height were set to factory specs and the unmodified engine was running on pump gas.

The lap began with a rolling start – which falls in line with current industry practices – and the time was confirmed both through an electronic timing system and two hand-held stopwatches. The ZR1 team will be posting a video of their run when they return from Germany and we'll be keeping our eye out for it when it's online the week of July 7th.

Top tip Mason!

still didnt beat the LF-A concept/pre-production/whatever u wanna call it ... so im happy :) but ill be watching to see if they try to push it, i know they want to beat the GT-R and theyre what? 1.5 secs off the pace ...

whats awesome is that it was driven by an Engineer, not some hired F1 driver or whatever ... almost gives me a sense that it wont take Mr. Universe to drive the car at its limits

They beat the GT-R by a few seconds. That is 1.4 secs off the Preproduction V-Spec GT-R that weights over 300lbs less and makes 70HP more than the GT-R.

This is completely stock even the tires, its the car you can buy right now. The only thing that was added was safety gear which adds weight to the car and slows it down. Without the wind, the safety gear and on their best lap I could definatly see them posting a 7:20 time.

oh word - didnt even realize the 7:25 was the Spec-V, not sure how that slipped my mind ... but that just makes the ZR1 even more awesome

They should put Jackie Stewart in the car. He claims he can drop anybodys time by 20secs and even did that to James May on a track. I wander how much he could drop off the ZR1 on a track like the Ring.

Where did Chris V. go?

They finally did a rolling start on the ring this time, and think it can go faster. I'm impressed with the car as I figured it wouldn't be much faster than a Z06 on the track with the extra power.

However, I wish this Ring performance evaluation crap would stop. Since the GT-R, it seems to have become THE means of testing a cars performance, and it's absolute crap; because conditions are never the same, and there is no standard set-up for any of these cars. There I said it...

So much for all the hype about AWD and Turbos from Japan. I guess in the end real HP and rear drive are still a viable and more than capable supercar platform:D

Note that Top Gear solicited two professional drivers to test the cars above and each car's best times are shown. This, like all tests, are very driver-dependent. Someone who's not familiar with a particular car, just isn't going to be as fast in it. As an example, the other driver of the NSX recorded a time of 8m 57.13... but this included a full 360 degree spin where the driver was quoted as saying he never had to take it out of second gear!

uh what? :squint:

the 'Ring has been a means of benchmarking for quite some time now ... long before the R35/GT-RIt has been used before, but not like it is now. When the R35 started listing lap times it became a new sensation. Before it was a means of testing the car, but now people look to the Ring as the end all for performance. In 04/05 people just mentioned that the CTS-V was "tested" and "developed" on the Ring, but nobody cared about its times so much. The lap time wars are now alot more intense and the publicity is through the roof. 2 years ago hardly anybody mentioned cars lap times of the ring, yes cars times have been listed for years, and several European car manufacturers used it, but when did CEO's of companies start stating that their car would be faster than so and so's car around the Ring? The Japanese are in this thing head first and GM has followed them right into it with the Z06 and now the ZR1's lap times.

yeah the ring is bunk for testing imo. put 'em on tsukuba or laguna seca, something without 10 mile long straights and see where they stack up
