View Full Version : Running lean?
The past few days of driving the T/A iv noticed the water temp rising. When this happens im usually between 2-4th gear. If im crusing around town or through a neighborhood, the temp will creap up to around 200* sometimes more. I thought it was maybe cause it wasnt gettin enough air to cool it, but even runnin at faster speed in 4th it will still creep. But at hwy speeds in 5th and 6th it cools down. The fans are working, I already checked that. Could it be running lean in higher rpm, and causeing the temp to rise? I havnt check the t-stat, but Im hoping its a 180* like it suppossed tpo be.

Higher rpms = More heat. Its probably "not" running lean. Just making more heat. I would do a cooling system re-vamp and try to figure out what your oil temps are getting to.

What are you doing this weekend?? :D

Depends on how much I drink at the par-tay. Don't you have to work saturday anyways?

Aren't the LT1s pretty bad about overheating? Something with the cooling system?

I would change the thermostat.. test the old and new t-stat in a pot of water you heat up on the stove. Use a thermometer and make sure they open/close like they should.
I was fighting something similar and got a new t-stat.. I tested my old one and found out it was opening and closing very slowly as opposed to snapping open and closed like the new one. So in effect it was like running with no thermostat and it heated up all the time. Now it cools fine.

Check to make sure that the air dam under the front bumper cover, and the lower spoiler are all in place and not messed up. Those are important to how the air flows to the radiator when the car is moving.

Oh I forgot, this is an LT1 car? Those temps are probably normal.. my friend's bone stock 94 Z28 would consistently run at 220. It never overheated, that's just where it ran with the factory cooling system.. probably for emissions reasons. Hotter temps = less unburned fuel.
If you turn the a/c on, do the temps drop? That switches the electric fan(s)? on.

LT1 F body fan stuff.. here's when they turn on:
Primary (LH) or Dual Low-speed Fan(s) ON: 108 C 226 F
Primary (LH) or Dual Low-speed Fan(s) OFF: 105 C 221 F
Secondary (RH) or Dual High-speed Fan(s) ON 113 C 235 F
Secondary (RH) or Dual High-speed Fan(s) OFF: 110 C 230 F
Those are absurd temperatures for an engine to run at, but the engineers know what they're doing. Anyway, you can probably get a programmer to change the temps those fans come on at..

In heavy stop and go traffic, the temperature would quickly climb up into the 220-230 degree area, which is where the primary fan starts to come on.
Sounds about right. But Im still gonna check out the t-stat,
Finally got around to checkin out the t-stat today. It had a 180* one in it, but I bought a new one just in cases today. I replaced it and had to had almost a full gallon of 50/50 mix. Ran it down teh road got it warmed up and it hovered around 210* around town driving, but would drop alittle to 200* on the hwy. Only got about 15-20 mins of driving in it. I ran outa time. Im gonna take it out Wednsday on my day off and drive it more. I hoping that this takes care of it.
