Since I'm pretty much done with making modifications to the Shelby, we've been turning our attention to the '65 fastback. Our most recent conversations have revolved around replacing the Windsor stroker with an '03-'04 Cobra drivetrain or, if not cost prohibitive, perhaps a 5.4L ala the GT500. I'm thinking it would improve the fun factor of the car, not to mention get better mpg and better drivability.
What do you think?

I think either drivetrain swap would be a step in the right direction. Having put a 351 in a 65 Coupe for a friend I know that space is limited under the hood. What would have to be done suspension wise up front for either swap? Mustang II style suspension with no shock towers? Or something even more wild? IMO the Terminator drivetrain would be the better option. Probably a little easier to find and probably be a little cheaper even from a crashed car.

393s run good but
id go with a 03 04 drivetrain and 6 spd
good mpg and that blower whine;)

I like the idea of the 5.4. :)

From what I have read you will have to cut the shock towers out for either one of those motors to fit.

+1 didn't know it had a 351 in it, but I guess if you want to be different, you could stuff a cleveland in it and turbo that too...

Okay, maybe I need to clarify. The car already has a 393W stroker in it backed by a T56 six-speed.
My question is whether or not I should keep what is in it, or swap it out for a modern powerplant. I'm pretty sure the shock towers would need to be removed to accomodate either modular motor.

no way would I swap it out. put you some 9:1 pistons in it and turbo it.... If you were to really do the whole mod motor thing though, it would be cool if you stick the irs under it and make it a real track terror.... now that would be cool....to me anyway.
Cobra motor. I love newer motor swaps in older cars.

Standalone EFI with turbo. Seriously. Just consider it a progression of the work already done. :)
Chopping up the shock towers to accommodate a modular motor just seems... wrong.

Please find my previous post NULL and VOID of all suggestions for an engine swap. You have an excellent base in place already. Just add boost to the current setup.

That late model thing is a good idea. Not to mention the reliability factor increases quite a bit over a big cammed n/a Windsor. Not that those aren't cool, but there's no denying that you can make just as much power with tons more reliability with a late model blown DOHC under the hood.. plus it would just look and be cool. Power Tour anyone?
Personally I like to tool around with a thumpy cam, but I've considered a Cobra drivetrain swap. I like beating the ground better, though.

My :2cents:? I love the idea of a TT mod motor swap. And given that you'll be losing the shock towers anyway, I'd go for a 5.4 over a 4.6...unless you wanted to do a stroker 5.0 mod motor, that'd be cool...The 5.4 would be a really neat foil for the GT500, though.
On the other hand, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Hard to argue with just slapping a couple turbos on the 393 and blowing it up first. ;)

Since when were cammed pushrod SBFs unreliable?
If I had a 393 already in there, I'd do something retro and crazy to it, like a 4V cleveland head swap and a Pantera 8bbl setup or Can-Am style mechanical injection with velocity stacks. Still gonna be cheaper than all these fancy poweradders, youve already got a compressed air car, how about a canted valve headed velocity stacked 7000 RPM screamer?

This may not be the answer you're looking for, but I would swap in a 5.4L DOHC. Big cars need more cid. :)

It's already got a 393 in it, I thought the cid of a 5.4 was like 330 or 347?
I would boost the 393, esp if you've already got the engine setup for it!! That car is going to always look good no matter what's inside :) I'd rather have that big cam hit to match the mean looks myself then sssssSSSSShHHHHHHHHHH after ;)
Good luck!

In Hot Rod a few months ago, there was a Mustang profiled...a '67 Fastback that had a 5.4 DOHC in it. The company was building the cars to sell. The article said it required "extensive shock tower modification." Something to consider depending on how you feel about that.

I LOVE my blown 393. It has so much torque, it is scary to drive. It take constant 100% attention to drive it. With you already having a 393, it would only be a decision on turbo or SC, and what compression and boost. Will it be a weekend play car, or DD? I am running 15 psi of boost, with 10-1 compression on E85. I would not want to drive it on the street at all if it had any more torque.
I went with a SC so I would have quicker response, and the power delivery more linear through the rpm range.
