Leave the cats on. I just removed the off road (no cats) MAC H pipe from my '94 Cobra Convertible, and the car gained almost 12 ft lb of torque and 2 hp with the OEM H pipe. Sounds better too.

Maybe I'm getting older, but I'm going to put cats on my car.. for the simple fact that I smell like rich exhaust the rest of the day if I walk around my car while it's running. Not to mention your bumpers get black, etc, without cats. They have come a long way from the huge restrictive pieces of **** on OEM cars a few decades ago.

That's wierd Reef, I don't have any problems with black crap (or anything else) on my bumpers from not having cats. I do agree with the gas smell, chicks dig it when you use race gas though! :D

Well it's not a huge deal.. just a little buildup right above the tailpipes. A couple minutes with clay and it's gone.. the black trim on your GT probably hides any.

If my car runs for more than a couple minutes in the garage you will kill all living creatures within 50 ft. Even with the garage door open.

Is there a big differenc between the OEM and a high flow set

probably not much, especially on a stockish car. be careful with the high flows if you have to pass emissions. I had a 50 state legal Random technology cat and they flunked me because they said it looked like a resonator and not a cat.

My Bassani X-pipe is a 5 pc design that came with both a straight section of pipe and high flow cats that are interchangeable. I just drop the X-pipe and swap those sections out when it comes emissions time. I can really tell a difference in the upper RPM band on my car with them off. I don't have a problem with the fumes with mine off either. Smells the same with or without the high flow Bassani cats.

Those of us who do have aftermarket camshafts and big floppy injectors.. hardly the best recipe for a clean, non-carbon-emitting exhaust

I have one car without cats and when it has leaded 112 in it ... it will stick up a 50foot area.. It passed testing without cats and if it does not at renewal i will slap the high-flow catted pipe on and re-test.

I had Bassani X w/ gutted cats and stock mufflers on my 97 Cobra. Sounded very good IMO but it did smell within a few feet of the car and even inside the car when idling in traffic jams. Passed Marta easily with MIL eliminators.

If I did that over I would leave it catted just for the smell alone.

The Vette has Random Tech hiflo cats and has passed without any issues.

I'm working on it... Looks totally redneck driving around with no hood or rear spoiler. They should be back from paint this weekend.:biteme:

I run an o/r prochamber all year except on test day. ;)

But, if you don't have the tools, place, time, and energy to do the swap once a year then don't bother. It's a PITA to me because I've been doing it since 1997.

Let me give you an idea here:

2 ramps
6 jack stands (because I'm paranoid)
2 floor jacks
jacking the car up 3-4ft off the ground
assortment of tools
roll-out to lay on or something like cardboard if your on gravel
8 bolts to losen
4 O2's to unscrew and unplug
1 exhaust gasket swap (96-04)
holding stock H pipe with chest and kees while you start the bolts
crawling from under the car with an H pipe on your chest
____________________

two times a year = PITA

Oh, and a place to store the stock H pipe, tools, jacks, jack stands, and ramps for 364 days a year.

If any of this scares you, choose another mod. :)
